Deowongo Island
Protected FOREVER since 2012
Deowongo Island is the only island on Canadarago Lake and has a unique cultural and ecological history. The island is only accessible by canoe, kayak, or small motor craft.
According to local tradition, deowongo in the Oneida language signifies place of hearing. Before the forested shoreline of Canadarago Lake was developed, a notable echo could be heard from the island. About two-thirds of the island is in the town of Richfield with the remaining part in the town of Otsego.
